Summer months can be hard for Seniors, especially with a high electricity bill! In case you do not have a cool place to take your loved one, see our recommended places to go.

Where do you go in a heat wave?

  • Bakersfield Senior Center – They offer games, sewing, exercise classes and more!
  • Rasmussen Center – Play bingo, be provided with free dance classes, meet new friends, and have fun in!
  • Bakersfield Corps of the Salvation Army – In need of a lunch? The Bakersfield Corps of the Salvation Army provides lunches to local Seniors.
  • East Bakersfield Veterans building – They provide a place for Seniors to cool off!
  • Arvin Community Center – A great place to go to stay cool!

How do I plan for power outages as a caregiver?

  1. Have a plan! Make sure you have a plan in place with your Senior! Make sure you have a way to contact your loved one during an emergency.
  2. Be prepared! Have flashlights, batteries, and other power sources in an easy to reach and find place in the home. Make sure these supplies are clear are easy to get to and there isn’t anything blocking the way. Stay away from using candles during an outage because these can be dangerous to use, in case of falls. Have a first aid kit, a list of emergency contacts, and other supplies ready to go!
  3. Medications and medical needs: Keep a supply of medications readily available. Have a method to keep the medications in a cool area to maintain its temperature. Ensure access to the medications is ready to go! For Seniors that have medical equipment that is plugged in, make sure to have a backup battery source.
  4. Environment: Emergency situations can happen at any moment! Be prepared and ensure that all walkways are clear to prevent falls!
