Your dad had a stroke, and his recovery is going to take a lot of time. His doctors said it’s not guaranteed he’ll regain full mobility again, but there’s that chance if he has a chronic disease care plan in place. What happens as someone recovers from a stroke? The care he needs falls into three categories.
Emotional Care with Chronic Disease Care Providers
Is your dad depressed? Would you be able to recognize it? Chronic disease care nurses are trained to identify the signs of depression and help your dad navigate the anxiety and depression that follow a stroke.
If a nurse feels that your dad needs more help than a chronic disease care professional can offer, a consultation will take place with the doctor to determine the next steps. Sometimes, it helps to have a therapist specializing in stroke recovery to help your dad.
Physical Care
After a stroke, there’s a lot of recovering your dad has to do. He has to learn to use his hands again, and he’s going to have to learn how to walk. He might need to learn how to sit up, get out of bed, and step in and out of the shower.
He’s going to work with a physical therapist to regain as much of his mobility as he can. He’ll also work with an occupational therapist to learn how to do his daily tasks like brushing and flossing his teeth, getting dressed, and putting on shoes. It may take adaptive equipment to help him with these different aspects of daily care, but a therapist will help him through it.
There’s a chance that your dad will always need a walker or wheelchair. His home needs to be adapted to work for his changing needs. This can mean moving his bedroom to the main level of the house or rearranging furniture to fit his changing mobility.
Social Care
Families don’t often think of the social care needs after a stroke. There’s a lot your dad is going to be unable to do for himself. Nurses can help him regain speech skills through at-home speech therapy, but he may never be comfortable making calls again.
This can make it difficult to set up appointments, call a company to ask a question, or arrange financial transactions with his bank, credit union, or financial advisor. He’s going to need someone in the family to keep his bills paid. The last thing he needs is someone to forget to pay his mortgage, water bill, or electricity bill.
Chronic disease care services are incredibly beneficial during stroke recovery. You’ll have nurses available to administer IV and injectable medications.
