May is Older Americans Month!

Did you know that Wednesday, May 28th, is National Senior Fitness Day?

This annual event will have more than 100,000 Seniors participate in local health events across the nation! This year’s theme of Older Americans Month 2025 is Flip the Script on Aging! National Senior Health and Fitness Day is a part of Older Americans Month and its goal is to keep Seniors moving and to change perceptions and viewpoints about aging (Fitness Day, 2025). National Senior Health and Fitness Day is the nation’s largest older adult health promotion event and this year will be the 32nd annual event!

As a way to celebrate this national holiday, a list of resources has been created to help you celebrate and exercise with your Senior! Exercises can be incorporated into their daily lifestyle and it shows the importance of regular physical activity. It is recommended by the CDC for Seniors to aim for 30 minuets of exercise for five days of the week (CDC, 2025). Exercises can be low impact exercises such as walking, yoga, meditation, tai chi, and chair yoga!

You can help your loved one achieve their exercise goals and keep them moving! If you let your Senior stay sedentary, then they can lose mobility. Exercising is the best method to practice and retain their balance and mobility! Here is a list of some example fitness activities that can keep your Senior moving and help them achieve a healthy lifestyle! It is important to keep in mind their capabilities, along with what they feel comfortable doing.
