Let’s Stand Against Elder Abuse!

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is here! Do you want to stand against elder abuse?

June 15th is elder abuse awareness day! 1 in 5 Americans 60+ experience elder abuse! Elder abuse is an intentional act of harming older adults. (Nursing Home Abuse Center, 2025). After reading the signs, be sure to check out the attached videos below to further understand the seven different types of elder abuse and the local resources that are available.

Make sure your loved one stays safe! Be able to recognize the signs!

  • Physical Abuse: First signs of physical elder abuse can include broken bones, bruises, burns, cuts, scrapes, sprains, and other injuries.
  • Sexual Abuse: Additionally, Seniors that have Alzheimer’s or dementia are most at risk of sexual abuse. Be sure to keep a close watch on your loved one if they have dementia or Alzheimer’s.
  • Neglect: Also, signs of elder neglect can include dehydration, malnutrition, unclean clothing, insufficient food, lack of medical aids, poor hygiene, unclean or unsafe home, weight loss, and untreated infections or injuries.
  • Self – Neglect: Signs of self – neglect include not being able to dress themselves appropriately, they cannot feed themselves or maintain their basic hygiene, they cannot manage their financial affairs, and they cannot properly address their medical needs. Additional signs of self neglect include they live in unsafe conditions and they cannot run their home properly.
  • Abandonment: Signs of elder abandonment include confusion, being lost or scared, dehydrated or frail.
  • Emotional or psychological abuse: When elders appear depressed, withdrawn, avoid eye contact, are eating or sleeping differently, experience mood swings, are isolated from friends and family, or have low self esteem, this can be signs of emotional or psychological abuse in elders.
  • Financial Abuse:  Financial abuse is the most commonly self – reported type of elder abuse. Warning signs of elder abuse include cancelled checks that go to someone else, changes to power of attorney, eviction notices, evidence of unpaid bills, missing belongings, unusual interest in how much an elder is spending, and unexplained withdrawals.
