Hygiene routines are difficult. It is difficult for you when your loved one is forgetful, upset, or agitated. These challenges can make it difficult to maintain a good hygiene routine. Let them know that you are there to help keep them healthy, clean, and comfortable. Let them know that you are there to help them, and are not against them. Sometimes, including fun games or challenges can keep them motivated to completing the tasks.

Hygiene is very important, especially for our Senior loved ones. Sometimes it is difficult to keep them motivated to keep a consistent hygiene routine. It is difficult to help someone with dementia or Alzheimer’s to remind them to do the simple tasks that they were once able to do independently. Now more than ever, our Seniors need help to ensure that they have a consistent hygiene routine to keep them clean and healthy, so they can be comfortable.

Challenges of Dementia:

Some challenges of dementia include cognitive decline, memory loss, loss of interest, sensory changes of  vision and balance, mood and behavior changes that can lead to mood swings, embarrassment, or resistance to personal care.

What are some support strategies?

  • Give gentle reminders and prompts: Using verbal reminders, visual pictures of instructions, and demonstration of tasks can help remind them how to do some of these tasks to help give them support and structure.
  • Break down hygiene tasks: To make it less overwhelming, it is a helpful practice to break down hygiene tasks into smaller steps to make it less overwhelming for them. Simplify routines by breaking them into smaller and more manageable steps. You can use 2 – in 1 – shampoo instead of separate shampoos and conditioners. This can make the process longer and less manageable.
  • Create a comfortable environment: Make sure the restroom is hazard free, well lit, and is a place where they feel comfortable.
  • Respect and offering choices: Empower your loved one by giving them simple options – Would you like to use this soap or that one? Would you like to use the red or blue towel?
  • Use familiar products: Use their favorite soap, shampoo, and toiletries to provide a sense of familiarity and comfort.
  • Practice patience and empathy: Stay calm and supportive, even when the task is challenging.
  • Seek outside support: If you’re feeling overwhelmed, Purpose Driven Home Health has services that can assist you. Our compassionate home care aids provide personalized care that promotes dignity, independence, and well – being all in the comfort of home.
