Stages of a Caregiver:
- Expectant Caregiver – Prepare
This is the preparation time when you start realizing that your loved one may need caregiving resources. This is a good time to plan ahead with them, while they are at their best. Start preparing by researching their ailment and how you can best help them. Make arrangements with them of financial planning, legal preparations, and their wishes.
- Freshman Caregiver – Find
This is the stage where you will be assisting in basic errands, meals, and taking them to doctor’s appointments. This is the stage where it is best to find help of local resources that can assist you when caretaking. It will be a difficult journey but there are resources available to help you through this emotional journey.
- Entrenched Caregiver – Receive
This is the stage where you will have created routines, feel stressed, and will have fewer questions. This is a very important stage because it is important to evaluate how you are feeling and be able to reach out for support to help you.
- Transitioning Caregiver – Allow
This is the stage where your loved one’s needs has advanced beyond what you can help them with. There is a lot of self care that needs to be prioritized in this stage because it is a difficult emotional journey and it is important for you to address your needs as well.
- Godspeed Caregiver – Treasure
This is the stage where your caregiving journey has come to an end. Now is the time to fully reflect on your emotions, process everything that has happened, and be able to process your emotions, and move forward. Being a caregiver is a very important role of caring for your family member and it is a gift and a sacrifice! Many caregivers join caregiver support groups, volunteer to help other families, or can serve as a community advocate.
